A 7-day itinerary to discover the wonders of the Egadi Islands aboard your sailboat
If you are looking for a tourist destination that is still unspoiled, the Egadi Islands are the perfect place for you. This small archipelago is a true paradise on earth for hikers and diving enthusiasts, thanks to the countless coves, caves and breathtaking scenery it offers. Each island has its own unique characteristics, but they all share the irresistible, crystal-clear waters surrounding their Marine Reserve, one of the largest and most diverse in Europe. Favignana, the largest and most populous, is famous for its crystal-clear blue waters and unique bays such as Cala Rossa. Breathtaking limestone cliffs plummet toward the cobalt blue sea, and mountain trails offer wonderful walks. Marettimo is a true hideaway, preserved from tourism and unspoiled in both its waters and its terrestrial nature. Marettimo’s coastline is fascinating, with numerous sea caves piercing the sheer dolomite cliffs, such as the Camel Cave, which houses a pebble beach and the remains of a Roman settlement. Levanzo, the smallest, is a hilly islet with a coastline consisting mainly of sheer rocky cliffs hiding dreamy beaches. Everything here is basic but lovely: there is only one village – Cala Dogana – one street, two stores, two hotels and two restaurants. Peace and tranquility are assured, and the hectic city life soon becomes a distant memory.
Day 1: Trapani
Having completed check-in in the afternoon, we recommend that you set aside time for sightseeing in Trapani, where you will spend the night aboard your boat before departing the next day. There is no need for a car to explore the old town, as the city is not very large and can be easily visited on foot. A leisurely walk through its picturesque alleys will give you a truly atmospheric experience. The historic center of Trapani is dotted with historic buildings of great artistic value, evidence of different styles and periods. Shoppers are sure to appreciate Via Giovanni Battista Fardella, the city’s main shopping street, which boasts numerous cafes, restaurants, shoe and clothing stores. After a tour of the city, you can choose to dine at one of the typical restaurants or enjoy a dinner on board to start familiarizing yourself with the boat. Day 2: Favignana
In the morning we set sail for the island of Favignana, renowned for its enchanting beaches and coves, which create dreamy places surrounded by unparalleled crystal clear sea. One of Favignana’s most beautiful beaches is Cala Rossa, a must-see destination for diving enthusiasts. This beach is surrounded by tuff quarries and has crystal clear water that offers a unique spectacle. If you are interested in the history and culture of the island, be sure to visit Punta San Nicola a short walk from the center of Favignana, where you can admire the remains of a necropolis dating back to the 8th century BC. For the adventurous, the island also offers many great spots for scuba diving. In particular, the area to the west of the island where the Punta Sottile Lighthouse is located is a place full of coves that offers interesting scenery for divers. In the evening, be sure to sample local food and wine at one of the island’s many restaurants. Stay overnight at the port of Favignana to best enjoy the magic of the island even at night.
Day 3: Marettimo
The itinerary continues to Marettimo, the wildest of the Egadi Islands, a must for nature lovers. Its rich fauna and flora, along with numerous coves and castles, make it a fantastic destination for hiking and diving enthusiasts. In particular, Punta Troia Castle is one of the most fascinating places to visit. The island is a natural paradise surrounded by Europe’s largest marine reserve and topped by an imposing mountain. Sailing to Marettimo is an unforgettable experience, taking you to a place where nature reigns supreme. After a day of adventures, Marettimo will turn out to be a fashionable island frequented by international politicians, fashion designers and actors. You can enjoy fresh seafood at one of the local restaurants and attend village events before spending the night at the harbor. Day 4: Levanzo
In the morning, enjoy a fascinating boat tour to the magnificent caves of Marettimo, before continuing to Levanzo: the smallest and least populated of the Egadi Islands. The quaint town, consisting of small white houses, is located next to a picturesque harbor with crystal clear waters. Levanzo’s waters are a paradise for snorkeling, diving and sport fishing enthusiasts. One of the most beautiful beaches, Cala Dogana, is perfect for snorkeling and is located near the town center. Dinner will be an unforgettable dining experience with postcard views provided by local restaurants serving fresh and delicious seafood dishes. Dive in to savor the best of local cuisine!
Day 5: Levanzo
Enjoy a tour around the island of Levanzo during the morning. Coming ashore, be sure to walk to the top of Pizzo Monaco, the highest point on the island, to admire the spectacular panoramic view. A must-see attraction is Grotta del Genovese, where graffiti dating back to the Paleolithic period can be found. Despite the small size of the village, Levanzo offers wonderful views thanks to the many narrow streets and old fishermen’s dwellings near the port. Overnight in Levanzo and depart the next day in the morning to continue your adventure.
Day 6: San Vito Lo Capo
On the penultimate day of your vacation you will set course for San Vito Lo Capo, known as the “Caribbean of Italy” because of the color of the sand and the crystal-clear sea on the coast, one of Italy’s most beloved and coveted tourist destinations. On the way to San Vito, make a stop at Pizzo Cofano and Caletta del Bue Marino, voted the most beautiful beach of summer 2015. To admire all the beauty of San Vito Lo Capo, including Mount Monaco, the Lighthouse and the extreme tip of the Gulf of Castellammare, we recommend a stop at the Piana dell’Egitarso, a magnificent panoramic balcony. Thanks to Arab influences, the main dish of San Vito Lo Capo’s culinary tradition is cous cous, available in many typical restaurants in the area. After a delicious dinner in one of the area’s typical restaurants where you will have the opportunity to taste cous cous, a specialty of the local culinary tradition linked to Arab influence, you will stay overnight in your boat at the port of San Vito Lo Capo.
Day 7: Gypsy Nature Reserve & Return to Base.
Sailing to the Zingaro Nature Reserve, you will have the opportunity to immerse yourself in seven kilometers of unspoiled nature in search of the most famous or least crowded coves, such as the wonderful Cala del Varo, accessible only by sea. A true hidden gem waiting to be discovered. After fully enjoying the beauty of the sea and nature, you will return to Trapani, where you can visit Erice, a small medieval town just a 20-minute drive from the port. This magical place will transport you back in time with its thousands of years of history evident at every step, and every corner of the village will arouse unique and unforgettable emotions.
