Inside the sailor sack
First of all, bag is not a suitcase: this is the first rule! Use soft bags, which once emptied can be folded and placed more easily. Also because of the limited space, the clothes must be weighed and carefully limited: no baggage is presented on board. In the summer you usually live in costume, t-shirt, Bermuda. The only really necessary clothes are two gym suits, a pair of heavy sweaters, the wax, a woolen cap, possibly a hat with a visor to protect yourself from the sun. Essential sunglasses, sunscreens and a pareo (to the Aeolian Islands is a must!). Of course we must not forget at least some suitable clothes to go ashore, have dinner at the restaurant or take a trip on the ground. On board it is best to always wear shoes, to avoid painful blows against the equipment that is covered by the blanket. It is therefore necessary to bring shoes to be used on the ground and a pair with the right non-slip sole to be used exclusively on the boat, both for a matter of hygiene, and not to scratch the blanket and dunnages with wrong shoes or with pebbles that often fit together in the sculpting of the soles.

Organizing a good galley is a less simple task than it may seem, especially if the cruise itinerary favors stops in deserted bays rather than in ports equipped with shops. It takes a lot of attention not to forget anything, from matches to scottex, from spices to fruit juices and it takes a little ‘skill to choose the foods suitable for life on the boat. So the galley requires some planning! First of all it would be good to compile a very precise list after consulting the crew members about possible food problems and their tastes. In general it is better to avoid ready-made foods, both because those prepared on board are certainly healthier and tastier, and because cooking on the boat can be a fun experience. However, some ready-to-use freeze-dried dish is valuable, as an emergency, in bad weather conditions, when no one feels to be busy at the stove.
It is good to always start by estimating, even in an approximate way, the time spent at sea without being able to do the shopping or thinking of buying only fresh food in small quantities. If the destination is the Aeolian Islands (except in Lipari where there are supermarkets) you can make food by using the small shops in each island, where the choice of products is reduced.
On the boats you will find the refrigerator or refrigerators, but it is always advisable to provide at the time of boarding, to purchase non-perishable or heavy goods. The water is never enough, calculate at least two liters per person per day, and choose the plastic bottles. Also pack the drinks (in cans or in plastic bottles). The milk will be long-lasting, preferably in a half-liter envelope. In addition to the main meals, you can consume many “snacks” at any time, especially during navigation. The list should therefore include a large supply of cookies, chocolate, crackers, puddings, pretzels, tea and coffee, and it would not be bad to have some candy that always puts joy! Pasta is essential! Often single dish! We recommend the one with faster cooking times. Rice is favored parboiled, not overcooked, it can be done in abundant quantities and a rice salad is always a good idea! The fish, even when it is very fresh, is kept perfectly clean by the entrails only in the refrigerator for a couple of days at most. Convenient meat and canned tuna and eggs. Avoid already sliced cold meats, better buy them from time to time. Attentive to fresh cheeses, they acidify very quickly and can only be kept in the fridge; recommended grana, but not grated. Fruit and vegetables not too ripe! Speaking of packs, you have to minimize the glass bottles on board, which can break down by spilling the contents and dispersing thousands of tiny fragments throughout the boat. Therefore: oil, water, tomato paste in plastic packs. The only exception is obviously made from wine, which will however be carefully stowed down, possibly in bilges.

Eating on board
Especially when sailing, breakfast, lunch and dinner are among the pleasures of life on board: they mark the day and are all gathered around the table, or in the cockpit with the bowl between the knees to not leave alone the helmsman. It is right that all the crew approach the stove; the ladies will feel really on holiday cooking only once in a while, those who never cook will be able to fund their culinary skills, everyone will realize that preparing food is still a job and the meals will be more varied and imaginative. Whoever does not feel up to it can make up coffee, tea, juices and canapes for breakfast, or offer himself as a helper of the kitchen chief. It is always better, however, not to go into complicated and laborious recipes !!! Finally, it is a good rule that those who have cooked put the kitchen in order and wash the dishes: this way you will avoid grumbling about the quantity of pots and containers used. And do not forget to always compliment the chef on duty: it is a small kind gesture that rewards every effort !!!
Drinking on board
In port, or in the harbor, nothing is more pleasant than a glass of sparkling white tasted in the cockpit at sunset or a whiskey sitting on deck, in the moonlight. But we must never exceed, both in order not to embarrass the remaining sober crew members, and because losing control of one’s physical and mental balance, by boat, is dangerous. Risks range from a trivial unwanted bathroom to an ugly slide on deck, up to an unseemly behavior, that the next day, except the protagonist, everyone will remember !!!
Skipper and hostess
Normally the skipper and the possible hostess have the task to lead the boat and possibly to cook the meals, but not to tidy up the cabins or serve at the table, unless these services are explicitly included in the contract! The crew must be treated equally, with due respect and courtesy. When boarding, it is a good idea to ask the skipper to illustrate the characteristics and services that the boat can offer: lights, use of the toilet, cooking fires and as much as necessary to move comfortably above and below deck. Normally the crew is at the expense of the guests with regard to the galley and meals on the ground. Please note that the program of a sailing cruise is subject to many variables (meteorological situation, sea conditions, etc.), which sometimes oblige the skipper, at his own unquestionable judgment, to modify the program, adapting it to the new situation. It should therefore be emphasized that a sailing cruise is not a travel agency program and that the choice of this type of holiday subjects those who adhere to the adaptation to the means and the environment in which the cruise takes place.
The first consideration is that a marine toilet has the intake and exhaust valves placed under the waterline and the risk of embarking water from these routes is real. Furthermore, every WC is different from the others. Therefore it is essential to find out about the exact functioning and precise location of the valves. It is often necessary to pump the water for a long time to make sure you leave it clean. Do not be afraid to exaggerate.
Here are the rules: to moderate the use of toilet paper, which could clog the toilet with very unpleasant consequences; do not occupy the toilet too long to shave or make up! Leave always in order, with personal belongings carefully stored in the special cabinets; remember that the toilet in port is not used and in the harbor it is used with discretion (the tender can take you to the ground).
